Q1 Why students cannot see the Similarity Report after submitting the Turnitin assignment?

A1 It depends on the setting of the Turnitin Assignment.

  • Teachers might set up the Turnitin assignment that NOT allow students to view the Similarity Reports.
  • Teachers might set up the Turnitin assignment that allow students to view the Similarity Reports after the Due Date.
  • Please read the instructions carefully and contact teachers for more advice.

 

Q2 How long does it take to generate Similarity Report in Turnitin?

A2 The Similarity Report Generation Speed of first four attempts depend on the paper size and the number of worldwide users using Turnitin. After three resubmissions a 24-hour delay is enforced between Similarity Reports generating.

 

Q3 When a student make a resubmission, will the current paper check against previous submitted paper?

A3 For resubmission to the same part of the same Turnitin Assignment, only the current paper will be kept. Previous submitted paper is overwritten and no longer stored in the Turnitin Database.

 

Q4 Can students submit papers after the Due Date?

A4 It depends on the setting "Allow Submissions after the Due Date". If set to Yes, a student who has not previously made a submission will be able to submit paper once; If set to No, all students will be blocked from submitting papers after the due date. However, allow late submission is not applicable to resubmissions. Students CANNOT overwrite submissions after the due date, even if the late submission option is enabled.

 

Q5 What are the file requirements for generating the Originality Report in Turnitin?

A5 Refer to [3.6 File Size and Type]

  • Files must be contain at least 20 words, file size less than 40MB and less than 400 pages.
  • Files must be one of the following file formats: Adobe® PDF, Microsoft Word® (.doc/.docx), Microsoft PowerPoint® (.pptx, .ppt, .ppsx, and .pps), Microsoft Excel® (.xls and .xlsx), Google Docs via Google Drive™, Plain text (.txt), Rich text format (.rtf), HTML, OpenOffice Text (.odt), WordPerfect® (.wpd), PostScript (.ps/.eps) and Hangul Word Processor file (.hwp).

 

Q6 What will happen if a student submit two similar papers to two Turnitin Assignments in the same Moodle class?

A6 Those two submissions will NOT check against with each other (The paper will be excluded as Matched Sources by default).
In another situation, similar papers submitted to different Moodle classes will check against with each other, even if the papers were submitted by the same account and to the same instructor.

 

Q7 How can teachers delete submitted papers from the Turnitin Database?

A7 Make resubmissions by uploading dummy papers, the previous submitted papers will be overwritten and removed from the Turnitin Database. The Turnitin assignment settings might be revised to enable resubmission.

 

Q8 Why the Similarity Percentage will be changed after the Assignment Due Date?

A8 Similarity Reports will regenerate within an hour of the due date and time to allow student submissions to compare against one another within the same assignment. A change in the Similarity Report similarity index may result from the regeneration of the reports. Moreover, as resubmission is allowed for some Turnitin Submissions that students might keep updating their files before the Due Date, therefore only the latest submissions will be stored on Turnitin Database.
