13.2Restricting Access

Preventing students to access course activities / resources by different conditions.

13.2.1 Use Case 1 - Restricting Access by Date and Time for Files

1 In the settings of course activity / resource, go to the section Restrict Access, click "Add restriction" button

2 Choose one of the conditions

3 If more than one condition applied, set match "all" or "any" conditions.

4 Activity Completion Condition : Preventing access by completion status of other activities.

5 Date Condition : Preventing access by a specified date and time.

6 Grade Condition : Preventing access by a grading range.

7 Group Condition : Preventing access by certain groups.

8 User Profile Condition : Preventing access by fields of User Profile.

  • Title = Guest Student
  • ID number = Student Number (xxxxxxxxA/S)
  • Department = Programme

9 Restriction Set : Apply complex logic by a set of conditions.

10 Hidden Otherwise : Click the "Eye Icon" to make the activity / resource completely invisible to users who did not match the conditions.

13.2.1 Use Case 1 - Restricting Access by Date and Time for Files

1 On the course page of the subject Centralized Group, click the "Actions Icon" on the top right corner.

2 Select "Turn editing on" to manage the course content.

3 On the section, select "Add an activity or resource".

4 Choose "File".

5 Press the "Add" button.

6 Input the name of the file.

7 Upload a file.

Note For the fist time using the function "restrict access", it is suggested to upload a dummy file at the beginning. After using a Guest Student Account to try to access the file before the designated time, replace the dummy file by a real one.

8 Under the section Restrict access, click the "Add restriction" button.

9 Choose "Date".

10 Choose "Form", input the date and time for showing the file.

11 Click the "Add restriction" button to add another time to block the access of the file.

12 Choose "Date".

13 Choose "Until", input the date and time for blocking access to the file.

14 Choose "all" such that students can access the file within the period.

15 Activity completion : "Show activity as complete when condisions are met" and select "Student must view this activity to complete it".

16 Press the "Save and return to course" button.

17 Double-check the date and time, teachers can click the link of the file to verify the content. After the checking/testing, remember to replace a real file if you uploaded a dummy one when creating the file at the begining.

Note Teachers can use the Guest Student account for trying open the file before the designated time.
